filled with glee!

At my grade school, every third and fourth grade class put on a musical each spring. Even in fourth grade, I knew I wanted to be the star of the show. Auditions were held and roles were handed out. So when I was cast as a marimba player, I was more than a little upset. Clearly my choir teacher did not see the star potential in me, and I was forced to be on the side of the stage, barely seen. Not exactly what I was envisioning.

The truth is, my choir teacher recognized something early on that I couldn’t. I can’t sing. While I’m not nearly to the point of tone deaf, I sound much more like Cameron Diaz singing karaoke in My Best Friend’s Wedding than Taylor Swift. Okay, maybe not that bad. But the music gods definitely did not bestow upon me the gift of song.

The unfortunate part about this is that I love singing. In my car, at a party, I will at least be singing along. If you get enough drinks in me, I will gladly partake in karaoke with a group of friends. I love musicals, and I secretly wish my life were like High School Musical where we could all burst into song and choreographed dance moves at any point. Embarrassing, but true.

You can imagine my delight when I discovered Fox’s new hit TV show Glee. For those of you who have seen the show, you understand my obsession. Those who haven’t seen it, start watching.

Glee follows Spanish teacher Will Schuester as he tries to restore a struggling Ohio high school glee club to its full glory. The only thing stopping him is the crazy but hilarious cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester. With a club of jocks and cheerleaders, misfits and fame-obsessed stars, Schuester prevails against Sylvester’s attempts to destroy the club time after time.

The show is funny enough in itself, but what really makes this show such a hit is the music. The incredibly talented cast sings and dances to popular songs such as Gold Digger, Don’t Stop Believing, and Somebody to Love.

While it’s different from Entourage or Gossip Girl, Glee is a fresh, new comedy that does not disappoint. It runs Wednesdays at 9/8 central on Fox, and previous episodes are available to watch on fox.com. I may not be the next Carrie Underwood, but I certainly will be singing the tune of this show for a while.
